I nipped into the garden yesterday to snip some herbs for the dinner, and got a bit of a shock to find this not-so-little fella lurking near the oregano!

We have seen them in the garden before, and although they look rather fierce, we are happy to see them as they are becoming quite rare, and in the UK are only to be found in the south-east of England.

The larvae feed for several years on rotting wood. Our bird-table sits on the stump of a dead tree... whilst the birds may not be overly keen on it, at least it serves as a feeding station the for stag beetles.

  1. I don't know anything about stag beetles. What do they eat? Are they beneficial in the garden?
